English Learning Online Resources - Updated 2013FEB01

Even though the majority of Vietnamese subscribe to metered InterNet, there are resources which can be used to improve your teaching techniques which do not use too much 'airtime'.

The advantage, for students, is that they get to listen to a variety of voices, which expands their listening skills instead of getting 'locked on' to their instructors voice. Most offer make and female voices which adds to the variety.

American 'English'
An oxymoron (plural oxymora or oxymorons) (from Greek oξύμωρον, "sharp dull") if ever there was!

Historically overseas broadcasting faculties owned by the US Government or it's agencies were regarded, rightly, as tools for propaganda. In recent years their have been different resources appearing, which are properly instruction-oriented even when funded by Uncle Sam.

American English Online
The name says it all. The home page can be found at: <
LearnAmericanEnglishOnline.com >. It has seven levels of instruction identified by colour: blue, red,  yellow,  green,  purple,  orange,  and violet.

It has downloadable material.

Australia Network
Australia Network has both broadcast and on-line teaching resources. Unfortunately,

there are no TV channels currently available in VietNam at this time, to my knowledge.

Their English language web site < http://australianetwork.com/learningenglish/ > has numerous aids that an make your teaching challenges easier.

On page: < http://australianetwork.com/passport/astari.htm >, they have IELTS Speaking Tests of various levels with speakers from different cultural backgrounds. Many of the modules an be downloaded so those instructors with fast, unlimited InterNet can download the material and let the students copy it to their hard drives.

Just make sure you virus check your media before sharing.

ABC Radio Australia
Another Australian resource is ABC Radio Australia. Their root English page is: < http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/intern … rn-english >.

A particularly useful page, for VietNam, is < http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/vietna … h/features >. On this page the instructions are given in the Vietnamese tongue which is handy for those students who need additional assistance in their English studies.

Programming is offered in many ways, check: < http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/help >, to see which is best for your students. Other transmission modes can be found on: < http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/radio/ … en/vietnam >.

BBC - British Broadcasting Corporation
The granddaddy/mother of on-line instruction is, of course, the BBC.

Australia Network has both broadcast and on-line teaching resources. Unfortunately, there are no TV channels currently available in VietNam at this time, to my knowledge."

Yes, the Australia Network is broadcasting its general TV channel, but with limited language tuition spots and few VN people would subscribe to it I guess.

Better to go to the website, where there are several resources available. There is useful deconstruction of the speech of real people speaking in real situations I thought was good.

Tks so much. It is really useful.

Tks so much Jaitch. It looks very interesting and useful for all.

Happy new year

Well done Mr. Jaitch!

I'm going to take the liberty of adding a few more, to save you a bit of time.  You don't mind...right?  I didn't think so...

Here's a website called The Corpus of Contemporary American English that has gathered 450,000,000 American English words.  Don't be alarmed by the use of the word "corpus", which could be confused for the word "corpse", which means a dead body, or something that's not useful any longer. Fear not, because this usage of the word means a gathering, or collection, of words and phrases.

The Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) is the largest freely-available corpus of English, and the only large and balanced corpus of American English. The corpus was created by Mark Davies of Brigham Young University, and it is used by tens of thousands of users every month (linguists, teachers, translators, and other researchers)...

Wow!  Hats off to BYU and the Mormon Church, whose members have already compiled the biggest genealogical database on Earth.  They sure are busy in Utah!

Here's The American English Pronunciation Dictionary, a free YouTube video.  Now people can work on their American English pronunciation from the comfort of their own home!

HUH?!? American English has it's own Facebook page? Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle...it sure does!

Okay...I guess that's enough time binding for now! All that information sure does give readers quite a bit to chew on, doesn't it?

thank you Jaitch. I plan study today
