The NYC Finnish Meetup Group was founded by Casey on August the 19th :

Next event: picnic in Central Park on September the 13th.
If it rains the meetup will be held indoors.

You can come along even if you do not know a word of Finnish.

Casey ( the organizer ) writes :

"Keep in mind that the purpose of this group doesn't always have to be about language learning (or, at all, although some members are interested in such) as I am quite a fan of random adventures for no apparent reason."

Hi
it is sound great, hoping more and more people will join in,
by the way,how mang members do you have in your meetup group so far?

Hi Bill !

The group has now 30 members, both Finns and Americans.

Here is the member list :

I contacted a teacher of Finnish at Columbia University and asked him to mention the group to his students. He told me that he would do it so hopefully more people will join the group soon. You do not need any Finnish skills to attend a meeting. The organizer ( Casey ) and several other members do not speak any Finnish.

If you do not know what Finnish sounds like you could watch this trailer ( with English subtitles ) for Joulutarina ( Christmas Story ), a Finnish movie from 2007:

Finnish is unfortunately not known for its beauty. Many non-Finns find it monotonous and harsh-sounding. So it may take some time before it starts to sound "normal".

I will not be coming to meetings because unfortunately I do not live in New York.
