Avoiding Import Tax Malta

Boxer20

Hello all.

To bring my car into Malta is taxed at 10,000 euros. And it's not a Ferrari!

It has a plate from another EU country.

For every 3 month period I am thinking of parking the car in Sicily in a garage for a month and then bringing it over to Malta by ferry for 2 months and then back to Sicily et cetera.

Would this work in beating the authorities draconian import tax laws?

What risks may there be?

I am not registering myself as a resident in Malta.

My Business is a registered Maltese business.

Thank you to all that spend their time to reply and help me.

@Boxer20

Welcome to the Forum, to live in Malta you will need a residents card.

volcane

You clearly have not checked the prices of the ferry :)

You will need a resident card here tbh if you are living here for more than 3 months - thats the law of free movement in the EU.  And you may not drive a foreign plate car in Malta once you have a residence card.

Your car would also need to get its VRT in the country where its registered and your insurance in that country will need to agree to this plan - unless that country is Italy this just wont work.

@volcane Thank you. I knew it was likely impossible. Storage most likely for a while.
