Malta by road.....!!????

if you gonna be here with your own car for 12 months there will be  whopping car registration tax to pay....unless you can prove you have owned it for more that two years

It can be a wonderful drive and if you have the time to make it leisurely then all the better! The normal route is UK, France, Switzerland, Northern Italy then ferry down to Malta...

We drove here from the middle of France where we lived before moving to Malta.  We drove because we had a dog and he travelled with us, being the easiest way to bring him in with the least amount of distress for him as he was then 11 years old.

The entire journey was great, we enjoyed it.  We drove from Limousin to Chambery where we'd booked our first night's stop.  We weren't rushing as we had the dog so gave him and us a relaxed journey.  From there we drove into Italy and had an instant shock at the dreadful roads and hundreds of tunnels and of course - the Italian drivers - though having lived in Malta for a year and a half now, we realise that Italians aren't quite the worst in the world after all!

We caught the ferry from Civitavecchia (just above Rome) on the Saturday night and landed in Malta on the Monday morning at 7.30am-ish.

It depends whether you enjoy the challenge of driving and finding places to stay overnight. France is very easy. We enjoyed it all, it was an adventure.
