Transferring Money

I keep reading that it is a total nightmare to transfer money back to the US, is this true? I live here and receive paychecks from my work but do not have a bank account here. I know I can use Western Union but is it expensive? Can I use the bank which I cash my checks at? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

As long as you you have your pay statement it shouldn't be a problem. You just need to show proof of your income or source of the money
It's very easy to open a bank account if you have a job contract here in Vietnam. HSBCmay be a better choice!
It's not hard to open an account even without a job in Vietnam but I hate HSBC.

I believe western union in VN cannot be used to send money, only receive money. You can either,

1. Ask friends or whoever is going back to your country to bring it for you

2. Bank TT

Theres tons of banks like ACB, Vietcom bank, etc....

As long, as you can proof, where the money is coming from/taxes paid, there are no issues. Virtually any bank will do.
We use Vietcombank and VIB bank and have no complaints about either of their services

Why do you not like HSBC? Right now, my wife and I use WellsFargo and Vietin bank to transfer money, but I was thinking about switching to HSBC because they also have branches in the US. If this is a bad idea, I would like to know.

Unless you have a premier account at HSBC you can't link accounts between US  and Vietnam. HSBC Vietnam is a separate bank
Shoot, that requires $100K... I guess WellsFargo and Vietin aren't all that bad after all.
As above posts, you have record of where and how you earned the money and that you have paid the tax on it.

Enrolment Requirements

A minimum Total Relationship Balance (TRB) of VND 1 billion or its foreign currency equivalent is maintained in deposit(s) or investment(s) at HSBC.

It's $100k in other countries outside Vietnam. I read people would open the account in Vietnam to get the Premier status since it's a lower requirement.
