New members of the Nigeria forum, introduce yourself here
I am an American Citizen married to an Nigerian. I will be moving to Abuja this August to teach. My job is located in Maitama, a British International Primary school. I am looking to meet fellow Expats that can give me advice on schools for my 11 year old son, places to furnish necessities for my home, markets, family places to enjoy and etc. Right now the most pressing issue is a quality school for my son close to my job. A school that is not to expensive and rigid, but more community, engaging curriculum and relaxed.
We are thinking about taking up an opportunity in Port Harcourt- still weighing up all the options. Any do's and dont's as we have never been outside the boarders of RSA......
It's nice to connect with you all and looking forward to meet you around Lagos, working for telco company.
Regards,
Sunil

Hi Gavin,
Dos:
1. To begin with, ask around your own network to identify their contacts already in PH.
2. Within the city, 4-wheel drives are the recommended transport. PH roads are special - especially when it rains.
3. Quite a number of good shops for groceries, veggies, etc
4. Be vigilant at all times - especially when passing through run-down parts of the city.
Donts:
1. Cross a busy PH street e.g PH/ABA Xprsway - the driving there is special
2. Hire support staff/domestics without solid refs.
PH is really an interesting place and I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay. :-)

Hi Connie,
Responding to your Qs in order:
Q1. It depends on the area of Lagos and the nature of your accommodation. After all, no one knows you are a 'black woman staying all alone', unless you tell them so yourself. :-)
That being said, Lekki Phase I is relatively safe - I have family living in that area. Plus Chevron complex is less than 20 mins away, driving.
Q2. Lekki Phase I is considered a posh-ish area and living standards are said to be good.
Q3. Go with your gut instincts. 'Nigerian females' are like their counterparts the world over. So you'll come across the good, the bad and the unforgettably nasty.
One would recommend you spend a few weeks observing the people around you before you start bonding over make-up, fashion and the usual ladies stuff.
Your work colleagues might be able to drop a few helpful tips too.
Plus you can join the Lagos Hash group - I think they've got some presence on Facebook.
Lagos is usually a fun place to be.
Best of luck there!
Please iwant to come to germany in sear of work but idont know anybody that's why I need your help please thank.
It would be nice to start with any Indian family living in & around Wuse 2.

Welcome to Nigeria, a land of great opportunity with people of good intention. Electric business is a lucrative one in Nigeria because of needs to revive the sector. But why didn't you try Lagos state. Because of her population and its power consumption. Anyway, anywhere you established your business it will be okay, but if I am to advice I will prefer Lagos for you.
If you need any help or advice you can send me a message through this platform (Expat.com).
First of all thank you very much for your kind advice, it is not fixed up about in which state we will start our business, initially i need to survey Nigerian electric market situations. If lagos is more potential for this sector we can start from there.
If you use Facebook you can add me: zia_siraji@yahoo.com
Thank You
