Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor was composed during the Second World War. The work's four movements reflect the devastating circumstances of the time and the intense suffering of the Russian Jewish population during the war. Beginning with a striking, mournful melody played by an unaccompanied cello, the tone of the composition remains dark and highly dissonant throughout, from the frenetic rhythms of the 2nd movement to the somber “Dance of Death” of the finale. The rest of the program includes the very romantic sonata for cello and piano by Nikolay Myaskovsky and the eccentric 3 Pieces for violin and piano by Mieczysław Weinberg creating a very original program.
