International drivers license

I'm an American residing in Budapest.
Where can I get an International Driver's License here?

Probably would of been much more simple if you got one before arriving to Hungary.
It's very complicated to get one in Hungary although I never applied for a international paper.
My husband had one years ago but he did the paperwork in the US.
The process of obtaining anything official in Hungary is never as easy as you'd hope for.
My husband now has a HU driving paper but had to turn in his US one first.
You probably would have to go to a doctor now and get a physical, have an address card etc.
I've heard you can drive up to one year in HU on your old papers but not sure if that's true or not.
Getting to drive in HU is costly and complicated.
Your first step would be to go to your local city hall and ask them.
They are the ones who issue ID's etc. At least they handle these things for locals.

That is true. From the US Embassy web site:

https://hu.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-se … -licenses/

And after one year, having the International Driving Permit won't help. One must have a valid license as well, the Permit is only an addendum to a valid license. It is not a driving license replacement.

Yes, it is. One must pass at least a written test, which is much more difficult and comprehensive than the ones in the USA. One may also need to take a road test. And may need to show a first aid certificate.

You can't.

But you can order one by mail from the AAA by mailing in this application:
