Paying bills in Rwanda

Hello everyone,

What bills do you pay? If you are renting, are bills included in the price of rent, and is this common practice in Rwanda?

How can you pay your bills (e.g. online, at provider's store, at the post office)? Which is the most convenient or reliable way?

With what frequency are different bills sent in Rwanda? Are there different deadlines for payment?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

What bills do you pay?
Electricity, Water, Internet susbcription, TV subscription, Health insurance, Mobile phone bills..

No. bills not part of the price of rent.  Yes this is the common practice in Rwanda.  A caution though.. if you move to a new house insist on seeing that the water bills are zero and water bill by previous tenant has been cleared and not carried over to you.

How can you pay your bills (e.g. online, at provider's store, at the post office)? Which is the most convenient or reliable way?
Electricity: its pre-paid so you pay before you use. Most convenient way to buy is by mobile phone, however local neighborhood shops usually sell them.  However the shop method can be unstable sometimes due to dropped connections, and if you are sending the househelp unless a trusted one will steal off you by buying less that you sent and pocketing the difference. But also note both work together as a back up to the other too.
Water: Post-paid. Easier to pay via mobile money.  However please keep the screenshot confirmation of the payments. The water body payment systems is one of the most erratic i have ever seen.. and despite many assurances that your mobile payment system is seamless.. its not.. (true story). Also can pay via banks but you need meter number and some details, plus you would not want to be stuck in a banking queue. When you do also make sure you keep the banking stubs/confirmation. Again that payment system..
Internet subscription: Usually by person to the offices or mobile phone options.  First inquire what are the payment options and get the most convenient for you (esp if the payment office is over 5 minutes away from where you work/live).
TV subscription. Almost all of the TV companies have mobile phone payment options.  They are very convenient, very easy and super fast.  I guess they are the 'hungriest' of the service providers here. have no complaints about their payment system.
Health insurance: You need to inquire this when you buy from them.  I get company health insurance so this gets taken care of..
Mobile phone bills:  Obviously the best option is post paid bills, but the mobile phone companies have pretty strict requirements for this.  So pre-paid it would have to be.  Most convenient way would have to be loading your phone airtime (what is called here) through your mobile money.  That means you want to make sure that you have mobile money on your phone to be able to load quickly when ur phone cuts off mid sentence during that important business call.. Alternatively buy a double sim phone (that is can load two different phone providers) and see what options work best for you.

With what frequency are different bills sent in Rwanda? Are there different deadlines for payment?
Water bills: Every end of the month.  However due to mobile phone its easier to check your balance at any time and pay via your mobile phone.  Remember to screen shot the payment and keep it safely.  The rest of the bills are pre-paid.
