I'll be moving to UK at end of Jan 2011. I need to be at both Southampton and LOndon during the week but main office will be in Southampton ; where do you suggest to live ? I am single / no kids. As I know Southampton is a very calm and small city while London is quite expensive in terms of rent. Any suggestions ???

Basingstoke would be a good choice - its got excellent motorway connections and easy (no changes) train service into both.
