Where to move in Malaysia for work and good lifestyle?

Hello guys,

I'm actually living in the UK. I've been there for almost four years and I feel more confident with my English.

I am now thinking about a new life in Malaysia. I've heard many positive things and I would like to have your input.

Where to start first? Are all cities the same or some better than others?

Where is it best to look for a job?

Thanks for your help.
Mams

The major cities are not at all the same. One feature is the proportion of Malays (followers of Islam) who occupy them, or if they have a mix of Chinese and Indian Malaysians. Cities in the north (Terengganu, Alor Star, Sungai Petani ) and the east (Kuantan, Kelantan) tend to be more strictly Islamic and have up to 97% of Malays. The proportions are lower in the KL area, Penang and some enclaves in the Valley.

Finding work is the biggest hurdle and that will dictate where in Malaysia you live.

There are quite a lot of international companies in the Klang Valley i.e. that includes Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya, Puchong, Cyberjaya, Kajang, etc. etc. There are also quite a few in Penang, both on the island and around Butterworth on the mainland. There are some industries in Johor as well, mainly shipbuilding and oil and gas. There is also O&G various parts, including Sabah and Sarawak.

Quality of life (good lifestyle) = having an income.  So concentrate on finding work before you dream of a future in Malaysia. It can, however, be rather difficult unless you are a specialist in some field.

What do you do for a living?

Hi Gravitas, thank you for your answer this is exactly the kind of response I was looking for and it's really appreciated.
I am working as a service coordinator for an Oil and gas company.

I think the plan for me would be first to come and visit the different place in Malaysia. Not sure how long it will take and where to start.
Everybody is going to KL, I'll do some search to see what to do, when and where.

Is it working to look for job even if you are not in the country yet?

Thanks again.
Mams

You can test the market by using the main O&G websites for job-seekers. I know that some senior project managers relocate from jobs in Scandinavia. It's always easier to be relocated by your present company if they have offices or partners in Malaysia.  You may have to accept local terms though.
