Housing question.

We're moving to Addis in August for 6 months. I'm looking at rental houses and I have a question.  What are the differences between G1, G2 and G3 houses?  I thought it was the number of floors until I noticed a two story G1 house.

Also, is the Bole area safe?

Interesting question! G1 means two floors or stories, one floor on the ground and the second floor above it. We usually refer to the second story as first floor, hence G+1 (G1). G+2 (G2), then, is a three-storied building. It goes on and on up to Gn.

Bole is largely a middle to upper-class residential area. It also hosts a number of embassies, NGOs and IGOs. Addis in general and Bole in particular are the safest and most peaceful places in Africa. However, it won't be realistic to rule out the possibility of rare and isolated incidents of theft or misconduct for which one needs to be careful.

Welcome home to Addis and Africa.
