Drivers licenses and foreign vehicles in Botswana

Hi All

I am new to this forum. I am in Maun for a two year contract, been here 5 months now. The cops stopped me and wanted to fine me 1000 pula for not having converted my SA license to a Botswana license. I manged to get out of that but they say they will book me if they find me again. I did not know about this so new expats you have 90 days to convert your license to Botswana version. I have been told that my South African license needs to be validated to prove it is not counterfeit. The transport department says i must send it to the SA high commission in Gaborone. I called them anbd they say they cannot do it. I have to go 2000Km home to the department of transport to get the letter.

Secondly does any one know how long I can drive my SA vehicle in Botswana, I do not wish to register it here?
