Debt collectors

I. Am owed $8000 by a Cambodian, as I am in Australia is there anyone that could help me to collect this money in Phnom Penh, incidentally the debt was to be paid back within 2 years otherwise I could clam the house as I have a signed agreement and they have defaulted legally the house is mine, any suggestions, thank you

Let the Cambodian keep the lousy $8000 and get on with life. You are rich compared to him.

Otherwise, good luck.

Yes MR4D, I suspect $8000 is just petty cash to you, seeing it is a paltry amount maybe you would like to reimburse me from your vast  reservoir of spare money as you obviously are a very rich man.

I'm in Cambodia because I need value for money for my own long retirement.  Sorry I can't reimburse you.

There's a saying...If you owe the bank $50K, you have a problem.  If you owe the bank $50M, the bank has a problem.  But I'll extend it for you.  If a Cambodian owes you more than $100, you have a problem.

I do hope you get your money back, but I'm not optimistic (obviously).  But I wish you good luck.

Mr4d, I will now enlighten you, I am 85 and ,in March I will know if I have to have a cataract operation on both eyes by a private specialist which will cost $2780 per eye, I could wait in line to have them done free but it would be up to 18 months time, the person in cambodia is aware of this, but as I am 6600kms in Australia they do not care even to make regular repayments, they are a heartless race.

I am sorry that you have problems with your eyes as you describe.  I remember 40 years ago Fred Hollows was doing cataract operations for $20.  But your operation is likely more involved I guess.

The Cambodian likely sees you as a rich barang that can be cheated.  I've been cheated by Australians too in the past, once for $9000 to a long term friend that I thought I could trust.  Turns out he had a meth addiction that I didn't know about when I lent him the money.  I won't see the money back, it was over 10 years ago now.

The best advice is not to lend money to people.  I was a softie too for a while, but soon learned.  I knew a shopkeeper once who used to let customers borrow money for groceries.  But he learned to stop doing that.  Once the customers can't repay, the shopkeeper loses doubly...not only does he lose the money he lent to his customer, he loses the customer because the customer can't come back to his shop anymore for fear of being asked for the money.

When someone asks me for money now I tell them I can't because I've lost too many friends lending people money already (I call 3 too many).  Two of those weren't for so much money either.  I usually get an angry response when giving that line, and they tell me I'm not their friend anymore, but they come back.  They wouldn't if I lent them money.

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament.  I don't know any debt collectors though.

"Legally", the house is not yours until a court awards you title, regardless of what the agreement might say. On top of that, who knows whether the house was a free-and-clear property, unencumbered by other creditors who had/have officially registered their lien against it.

I suggest you take a look here (link). It will cost you, of course, but recovering a % of your money is miles ahead of none of your money. Reputable agencies will not ask for any money from you, but will deduct their fee from any monies recovered from the debtor. Do a little research on which agency you decide to use prior to assigning the account to them. It is important to know whether there will be a charge should you decide to withdraw the claim from them say, for instance, there being no progress from them in their collection efforts. Be careful that you do not assign the debt to more than one agency prior to receiving written confirmation that the claim you had filed is now closed at their offices. Assigning the collection to multiple companies for collection will result in exorbitant commission charges.

Good luck with your recovery efforts, and with your upcoming eye surgeries.
