Siem Reap, which is one of Cambodia's major cities, provides various career opportunities to foreign professionals wishing to move there.

Looking for a job in Siem Reap? Here is an overview of its labor market and some tips to help you land a job.

Among the major Cambodian cities, Siem Reap is deemed to be a very developed and dynamic one. Located in the North-west of Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital city, some 315 km away, Siem Reap is the capital city of the province bearing the same name. Over the years, it has been attracting tourists and expatriates in large numbers for the numerous opportunities it provides. So if you intend to move there, finding a job should not be a major issue, provided you have skills and qualifications that are not available locally.

Siem Reap's economy is based on many fields, including tourism, crafts, food processing (noodles manufacturing and bottling of drinking water), agribusiness (farming, horticulture, greenhouse), services (catering, spreads, repair shops, health, retail), wood processing (furniture), construction, ceramics, etc. Food, tourism, water supply, construction materials, agriculture (rice), industrial equipment and handicraft (the production of souvenirs for tourists) are sectors that are expected to develop further.

Note that tourism is Siem Reap's key economic pillar with 1,072,635 arrivals at its international airport in 2014 and 1,888,918 visits during the same year. The service sector, for its part, is driven by more than 100 hotels and 200 guesthouses, some 150 restaurants and 150 travel agencies and around 3,500 tourist guides.

Agriculture, for its part, stretches over some 215,792 hectares of land with an average yield of 2.5 tons product/ha.

Labor market

Tourism is undeniably the main job provider in Siem Reap. In fact, you are more likely to be hired by Japanese and Korean restaurants which have successfully set up across the city. If you are bilingual and have a good command of English, you might as well be hired by one of the 506 elementary schools, 78 colleges, 19 high schools, 6 universities or the Siem Reap Vocational Training Center.

Find a job

During your job search, consider sending spontaneous job applications to major companies across the city. You can even pay them a visit if you are already on the spot, so as to produce your resume to them personally. Otherwise, you can browse job offers on the Internet thanks to numerous general and specialized job websites, as well as professional social networks.

 Good to know:

Your skills, especially if these are not available locally, will be a considerable asset during your job search in Siem Reap, maybe even more than your qualifications. These will entitle you to a higher salary than others. Make sure, however, to obtain a work visa and a work permit before joining in.
