How do you adjust to the Parisian culture and city in general?

I've moved to Paris about 2 weeks ago. I got a permanent job here. I've left behind all of my family, friends, for a new challenge in life.

2 weeks in, the language and culture barrier is already making me question everything. I'm also finding it difficult to make new friends. I'm also an introvert and that doesn't help.

This is getting me very low and I spend most of the time alone. Is there anything you tips or places you guys know of?

I'm almost on the verge of giving up, but I feel it's too soon and I want this huge change to be worth something.

I spent a summer there back in the day and to be honest, I was glad I visited only for the summer.  Why?  Did not like the people, period.  It was great to see history and made sure to see all the history Paris has to offer, it is awesome.  However, I would never live there, never.  I went back to visit some family about 10 years ago, it was the same.  Could not wait to leave.  Great place to visit, but living, not for me.

Hello samritshankar,

There is a an old saying which I heard it in Sinhalese language and it goes like this "if you go to bat's home you have to learn how to hang upside down to be comfortable there and to make conversations face to face with bat"

So if you want to live there for a while start with language, you will make other expat friends in your language course and when you are done with the language you are ready to meet Paris face to face. All the best!

I agree with finnbo, but no matter where you live, learning the language helps ten fold, especially in Paris.  When I arrived with just University language skills, some people refused to talk to me, even public service employees (e.g, metro).  But once I learned to converse in French, it was amazing the change in attitude from the locals.

Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for the replies. I have since looked up some French classes, and have joined some online communities to help in socializing.

Thanks a lot again, and I'm looking at this in a more positive light! :)

Hi samrithshankar,

Your topic has been moved to the Paris forum.
It might help you to socialise with expatriates living there.

Thank you,
