How to bring your car to Tanzania

Hello everybody,

If you exported your car to Tanzania, were there any formalities that needed to be completed beforehand? What were they?

What is the best way to export your car? Is there a limit on the number of vehicles, or perhaps the age of the vehicle? Are there limits on emissions or emission controls in Tanzania?

What are the expected costs of exporting a car? In your opinion, is it worth it?

Once you arrived in Tanzania, what were the applicable taxes? What was the customs process like?

How do you go about registering an imported car in Tanzania?

Is it best to buy a car once you have arrived or to bring your car with you, in your opinion?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi!
It is possible to import your vehicle to Tanzania. There taxes involved and you can use the authority's provided calculator (http://tra.go.tz/index.php/calculators-tools) to estimate the taxes. You will definitely need all necessary documentations of purchases or ownership of the vehicle. If you are transporting your vehicle in a ship make sure you have the documents earlier to process clearing at the port as any delays will attract charges. There are however many clearing agents who can process the clearing; just have documentations in place.
Once your vehicle has been imported and registered you will be paying an annual motor vehicle registration fee charged depending on engine capacity.
It is mandatory to insure your vehicle with a provider of your choice.
