It's pretty typical. You can live quite comfortably in most of China for between 3000 and 6000 RMB/month.
A second tier city will cost you more. Figure 4000 to 8000 per month.
First tier cities are much higher at 9000 to 25000. Western cities like Shanghai and HK are even higher.
