It's complicated by the following three factors:

1. The Expat needs to know espanol and its subset, Spanish-language medical terminology.

2. The Expat will need a job offer in the form of a contract before applying for a residency visa if that visa is based on job-status.

3. The Ecuadorian government discourages the hiring of Expats if EC nationals are available to do the job.

This is about the regulations

Section 174 of the Ecuadorian Health Code of 1971 (127) limited the practice of physicians, pharmacists, dentists, midwives, and other health practitioners to persons holding qualifications "granted or validated by the University of Ecuador". Under Section 179, health authorities were responsible for the detection and suppression of the illegal practice of medicine and allied professions "without prejudice to normal judicial proceedings". By Section 180, "It shall be automatically assumed that a person is illegally practising [medicine]... if, without holding a legally conferred qualification, diploma, or certificate, he possesses equipment or materials for such practice."

Ecuador needs medical professionals.

But Spanish-language skills are required.  Locals get preference if able.

Writing about Expat job-seekers in general, Kathleen Peddicord of Live and Invest Overseas responded this weekend to the question, can an Expat get a job in a new country?....

"Probably not.  To work in a foreign country, you need a work visa.  That is not easily obtained unless you are sponsored for a job by an international company, and relocated with their help."

She noted that Panama is an exception as it lately has been making work permits available to Expats.  Also, she said that starting an Internet-based business is possible.

Teaching English is another exception, but has its own challenges as discussed on other Expat.com threads.

Filipina nurses who came to work in the Reading, PA hospital told me the English language test was harder to pass than the international nursing test.  They were given a road map of the greater Reading area and had to give a phone caller directions on how to get to the hospital within a very strict time limit, since it was an emergency.  Only about 30% of the RNS spposedly proficient in English passed the test, even after being given a second chance.  I would imagine it would also be difficult for non-native Spanish as a second language nurses in Ecuador.

I am Ecuadorian, speak fluent Spanish, have a Associates Degree as a Registered Nurse from USA, has anyone experienced moving there and working as a nurse in Ecuador? What's the average salary? I have been in the states for over 20 years and have no idea on how to find a job there as a nurse, or if my credentials are even accepted there.

I've read through this entire thread and didn't read about the nursing situation in Ecuador. Is it anything like in the United States? Jobs go unfilled and some hiring includes "sign-on bonuses." If Ecuador needs competent, LICENSED Registered Nurses even close to how much the United States needs competent, LICENSED Registered Nurses, one would think Ex-Pats would be approved by the Ecuadorian government to fill the unfilled positions rather than nurses being spread too thin and patients being at risk of dying without competent nursing services. Just my humble opinion, folks. . . .

In Ecuador salaries for nurses are set by the government (as are salaries for many positions), even for non-government jobs.

Nurses can make from $1161 USD/month to $1760 USD/month for specialist nurses, per these pages:
