Travelling with dogs in Costa Rica

We will be in Costa Rica for 4 months with our dogs.  Aren't we required to leave after 90 days and for how long before we can return?  Can we drive across the border to Panama with our dogs in a rental car?  Or is this a problem?  Is there a quarantine period in Panama?  If anyone knows anything about this it would be very appreciated.  Also, does anyone know about long term car rentals? Thank you.  Laura

Yes tourists visas only last for 90 days but usually you can drive across the boarder, hangout for a few hours and drive right back in to CR. Driving with your dogs probably isn't the best idea, you'll have to present their health certificates on exit and re-entry. Its not a problem but will drag out the process. It would probably be best to leave them wherever you're staying in CR. There are no quarantine periods in central america for dogs coming from the US so long as they have the appropriate health certificates and vaccines. As far as car rentals go, be prepared to pay a hefty deposit. Most companies put a hold of around $2000 USD on a credit card and these funds are not released until the car is returned. Hope this helps!
