Operating department practitioner(ODP)

Responsibilities:

Inspecting the operating room for proper ventilation, electricity, lighting, temperature, hygiene, and safety.

-Carrying out preoperative patient record evaluation to confirm the completeness of medical records, valid consent, NPO time, diagnosis, radiology and laboratory reports, and implantable devices.

-Providing a safe environment by following the guidelines which minimize the risk of harm

-Setting up surgical table appropriately based on the surgical procedure

-preparing surgeons sterile and appropriate instruments and supplies throughout the surgery

-Establishing effective communication with both service users and cares

-Identifying and prioritizing emergency cases for operating room admission

-Inserting and removing urinary catheters and nasogastric tubes

-Participating in resuscitation procedures

-Following aseptic and sterile techniques

-Valuing diversity and inclusion

-Counting and verifying consumables (e.g. gauzes and sponges) and surgical instruments

-Attaching necessary connections before the surgical incision

-Ensuring proper exposure by using various surgical instruments

-Assisting the surgeon with hemostasis

-Assisting the surgeon with drain placement

-Anticipating the surgeon needs and predicting the next move

-Applying appropriate dressing

-Assisting in positioning the patient appropriately under the supervision of the surgeon and anesthesiologist.

-Collaborating with the anesthesiologist to maintain and stabilize the airway.

Skills:

-Detailed knowledge of surgical instruments Performing various sutures Tying varying surgical knots with both hands and instruments Deep knowledge of laparoscopic surgeries and laparoscopic instruments Ability of taking on the cameraman position in laparoscopic procedures Working at nights, weekends and holidays Adaptable to change in care plans Handling heavy workload Catheter tube insertion/removal Procedure documentation
