Should i stay or should i go?

Hi
I have recently been offered a job opportunity in Gibraltar with one of the large companys based there.  It would be a great career move for me and financially quite lucrative, I have no ties in the UK, and am not happy with my current job in London.
Having visited Gibraltar recently for the first time however, I have a few reservations.  I dont think i would want to live in Gib - property prices are high, and the town is not particularly nice - a lot of chavvy brits and a very un-spanish feel to the place.  I was considering possibly living in Spain and commuting to Gib each day for work, somewhere on the coastline up towards Marbella or possibly out west in Tarifa.  I know property prices are cheaper in Spain.  I also have the concern that as somebody in his late 20s and single, i may get a bit bored having come from the chaos that is London.
Can anybody give me any advice on this?
Cheers

Hi there!

I am in a very similar position! single, in mid 20's, from London, got a job in Gibraltar, confused.com... ect...

I will be moving in July and I am thinking of renting a flat in Santa Margarita.

Good luck!

One of my concerns is that my level of Spanish is pretty poor, and i worry that this may prevent me settling in properly if i lived in Spain.
How is your Spanish Pablo?

My Spanish does not exist at all ! haha

In fact, that is the 3rd main reason why I want to go there - to learn Spanish!

I think we wont be the only people who can't speak Spanish... moreover, I think most of people who are moving to Gibraltar can't speak Spanish (that's why Gibraltar and not other places in Spain)

Think about people moving to London. Often they can't speak English at all! and after a year or two, their English is perfect!

I just try to be optimistic, its only 2 years for me in Gib. It's like a long holidays.

I don't speak Spanish however have recently downloaded onto my iphone http://www.earwormslearning.com/set_earworms.php which are 200 basic holiday Spanish words vol 1 and there is a vol 2. Its getting me started ...

I plan to employ a Spanish tutor once a week and see how I go.

I've been to Gibraltar and Spain a few times recently.  I like Gibraltar but need to see more of it.  I haven't considered living in Spain.  I was in Tarifa this week and we liked it a lot.  Its a small town with quite a few surfing shops.  The apartments looked nice from what I saw on the outside.  Lots of restaurants and the beach was lovely.  We went to La Linea, it wasn't my cup of tea so wouldn't live there.  From what I've seen on the net Gibraltar would be more expensive to live than Gibraltar. We travelled around by bus/coach which was good and very cheap.

Even though Gibraltar may be less vibrant than London, which I have considered, the opportunities to travel to different locations in Spain and North Africa suits me.

Whilst writing, can I ask you both, did you find your jobs through a recruiter in London or Gibraltar?  I have been in email contact with a recuitment agency in London who are opening an office in Gibraltar.

I'm wonddering about the salaries, are they ok?

Best
Coco

Go! what have you got to lose?

Dear Mrs201,

with regards to Gibraltar having a very "unspanish feel"....you do realise Gibraltar is british right?.....hence the lack of a spanish feel. Same deal as Southampton really.....its not Spanish, hence the "unspanish" feel.

Just trying to help.   :)
