Banking

Is there a great difference in Canadian banks?
I would like to hear what are the most popular banks to bank with when settling in Canada (and why?).
How easy is it to open an account?

The five largest banks in Canada are:
-  Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)
-  Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD)
-  Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank)
-  Bank of Montreal (BMO)
-  Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)

All the major Canadian banks are similar in quality of service and product. They are also chartered by the Canadian government so your money is safe and secure.

You will need official government-approved photo ID to open a bank account. Your PR card should be enough but your health card may not be accepted (health cards in some provinces do not have a photo).

Thank you so much for your swift response, PhotoSmurf. Much appreciated.
