Insurance coverage in Fiji

Moving abroad requires adequate insurance coverage.

What type of insurance expatriates need the most in Fiji: health, house or liability insurance? All of them? Do they come as a package?

Are there other insurance options to consider like critical illness, damage or property insurance?

Is it better to purchase insurance from an expat insurance specialist or from a local insurance provider?

And what about insurance costs?

I can only speak to health insurance, but after going with a US-based expat option with relatively high rates during my first year here, I switched to the local BSP Life health insurance for a fraction of the cost of the other one.

But if you want the option to return to your home country for treatment, you'll probably need to opt for an expat insurance option. If required, BSP Life offers medical evac but your options will be limited to either India, NZ, or Australia (totally reasonable, especially if you home country is much farther away).

Depending on where you live, you may really want to invest in home insurance. Flood and storm damage is a very real possibility, as you can see from the TC Winston aftermath.

Insuring your valuables and electronics is also a great idea, as theft is not uncommon here. Also electronics are generally quite expensive in Fiji, so replacing them might cost you more over here.
