National Day Mugging

One of our family friends, in his late 30's, in Riyadh, living in Malaz, just returned after vacation last Wednesday. His vehicle was not starting since the battery was discharged. He went out of his home to the corner store to get some drinking war for his family on Thursday evening. Sadly, he was mobbed and mugged by 5 young Saudi boys celebrating National Day and robbed of all his cash. He didn't resist and simply handed his wallet and hence came out without any physical injury.

Times are a changing here, my friends.... sadly

So much for National Day!

Very sad....
Off-course similar to this might happened to few others too. I must say security in Saudi Arabia is very nice. There are even bad incidents happening in other countries like USA, Europe, Asia etc.

Those were some crazy youth who did a bad thing on national day. May God show them the right path.

The guy must report to the police, and I think they will take care of this issue in a good manner.

A doctor friend attached to King Fahd Medical City found his temporary home. on arrival a few years back, burgled when he returned after a weekend trip out of Riyadh.

When the cops were called they asked him if he had any idea who it may be. He answered in the negative. The cops just told him if you do have any idea then please call us and we will arrest and book him.

He could have sent me to jail if he had a grudge and chosen to name me for starters..... phew!

Okay, on another thread I spoke about the fact that the Mutawa should be on the streets, not in malls.

What you're saying here supports my assertion.

Just heard that a villa INSIDE the Jadawel compound was burgled and CLEANED OUT during the Eid holidays. I cant understand how that could have been achieved with the two strict levels of security at the gates with all the concrete, detectors, and sliding doors unless it was an INSIDER job?

One of the guys who works on my compound who also cuts hair to earn extra cash, a nice old man from pakistan, was mugged in town a few weeks ago they took all his wages and haircut money 5000sar, 3 saudis cornered him and he was scared to fight back in case one had a knife.

Any vacancies for a new barber in your compound?

oh no, not the hair thing again :D

I still use him as my barber, he does ok ;)

If he charges you more than a Quid then you are getting ripped off, mate

I usually pay him about 5 quid, no probs :)

FIVE Pounds Sterling? Wow! Thats the mother of all ripoffs....

Thank God this doesn't happen during Eid atleast....or the media would shoot its mouth off again with the whole Terrorism thing.

The headlines would be smthing like this : Eid-Festival of Terror

Goes to show Saudi National Day is just another excuse for a festival to get in touch with your inner barbarian.

In a city like Riyadh with a population of around 10 million there are bound to be a few bad people around, unfortunately, but I can't see a link to terrorism there myself?

For comparison last year my wife's sister had a gang of young lads breaking into her front garden shed at 1am, she was terrified and phoned the police. They called round to see her at lunchtime the day after, nothing was done. This was in the UK the day before xmas.

Jadawel compound villa sacked at Eid holidays? That's pretty funny cause they stopped allowing more than 4 guests per house since a few months ago a person had a party and their next door neighbor got totally ripped off.

Those pricks ruined it for me!

This came in my email inbox just a few minutes ago and maybe useful to keep in mind although I do not want it to create any unnecessary anxiety in the minds of the members:-

Description: Worth Passing On!

Sad, especially if you are inclined to 'help' people...

While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it. For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Police and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the Police advised even before they went out there to check....

"There are several things to be aware of ... gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women)to stop their vehicle and get out of the car.

"There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police where gangs are placing a car seat by the road...with a fake baby in
it...waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby.

"Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a desolate area and the person -- woman -- will be dragged away,  beaten and raped, and usually left for dead. If it's a man, they're usually beaten and robbed and maybe left for dead, too.

DO NOT STOP FOR ANY REASON!!!
DIAL 9-9-9
AND REPORT WHAT YOU SAW, BUT DON'T EVEN SLOW DOWN.
"IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSCREEN, DO NOT STOP TO CHECK THE CAR, DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND DO NOT SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED
WITH WATER BECOME MURKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION, AND YOU ARE THEN FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF THESE CRIMINALS.

THIS IS A NEW TECHNIQUE USED BY GANGS, SO PLEASE INFORM YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES.

THESE ARE DESPERATE TIMES AND THESE ARE UNSAVOURY INDIVIDUALS WHO WILL TAKE DESPERATE MEASURES TO GET WHAT THEY WANT."

Please talk to your loved ones about this. This is a new tactic used. Please be safe.

Get started NOW -- SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND LOVED ONES TO BE CAREFUL AND AWARE OF EVERYTHING AROUND THEM SO AS NOT TO BECOME A VICTIM.

Come on, back home we have one where "if a person high beams you, don't high beam back, that's an initiation for a gang member and you'll be forced to play chicken" or some crap like that.

I haven't seen any babies on the side of the street, but tell ya what. Someone throws eggs at my truck, I'll just ram his ass and throw him into oncoming traffic.

My brothers compound bus driver got his ass beat the other day when he swerved onto a Saudi driver, at the light, the Saudi got out and clocked him right in the eyes. No doubt about it, he deserved it, he was coming back from school with a van full of kids, should've have been driving like a dumb uneducated ****. But sometimes, it's others that also need two be knocked out.

Thanks for the info. :)

Its always good to be aware and cautious and move on wherever one encounters anything extraordinary, like the above, seen or happening in public places. It is quite natural that human emotions will automatically respond in a sympathetic manner but the risk seems too high.

@Musicman I get some comfort in the fact that we are not allowed to drive, therefore will always be escorted and not alone; that will help and provide a deterrent of sorts I hope.  Still, thanks for the information - the world is becoming a crazy place with all of these different gang initiations, it's happening all over.

yep, exactly so. i have instructed my driver and family to strictly keep clear of any such sights and events along the way during their daily sojourn to and fro work and school.

But you'll sometimes be in a cab and there have been recent stories about cabs being forced off the road, at which point the cabbies jump out and RUN!  The occupant is then left to fend for herself (and the results haven't been pretty--scan the forum for these threads).

I'm not saying this happens frequently--in fact, far far less than the capital cities in most countries in the world.  But what I am saying is that you really shouldn't think you can count on anybody else to protect you (somebody making 3,000SAR/mo. and supporting wife/children in his home country is looking out for himself).  Don't feel comfortable--be alert.

In the area around the Saudi- French bank the latest trick I have been informed about is when you are driving on the streets somebody will through an egg (or eggs) at your windscreen. The natural driver reaction is to turn on the wipers and clear the windscreen. Doing this does nothing but smear the egg all over the screen forcing you to stop. That's when you will accosted by the rest of the gang.

Do not stop
Do not turn your wipers. Drive as far as you can before stopping to clean the windscreen.

Last Thursday evening my Indian barber got shot in his saloon.

A young Saudi walked in for a shave. After the job was done the barber asked him for SR 10. The customer refused and said he would only pay SR 5. They argued and bickered. The Saudi walked out, drove off in his car, came back and shot the barber.

Luckily he didnt die. The Saudi has been arrested. What will become of the case is left to be seen.

Moral of the story. Dont argue with the locals.
