Breach of contract

The employer said this job doesn't exist anymore and offered him another position ( kind of a demotion). Appropriate clauses must be looked for in the signed contract between the employer and the employee.
Usually demotion is  something that's offered to employee to accept or quit.

Since he hasn't started working there, if he doesn't accept, aren't they supposed to make up for the financial losses due to his resignation from his job and sale of our stuff?
