TELEPHONE COMPANIES

The +100-yrs. monopoly Cable & Wireless as a British colonial inheritance St. Lucia and many other Caribbean islands had is now broken.
The company underwent reorganization and now operates as LIME http://www.lime.com/en/ and also http://www.time4lime.com/lc/
LIME is the only land-line phone provider.  Mobile service and Internet (land-line and wireless) access is acceptable at prices not much higher than overseas.

Digicel http://www.digicelstlucia.com/ provides good mobile services and wireless Internet, and is the only competitor.
Great customer service when their network works well.

KaribCable is a regional cable Internet, cable telephone and TV channel provider. http://www.karibcable.com/

There is always news of new strategic alliances and new submarine cables to be installed.

Satellite communication is available through Tempest Telecom http://www.tempestcom.com/guide/guide.a … 176&view=3

Internet cafés are everywhere but - like everywhere else - hard to find when you need them. :P

You can read St. Lucia's Internet usage stats at http://www.internetworldstats.com/car/lc.htm

Most major brand name cellphones, etc. are available, yet most locals and expats buy them from USA.

Hi John,

I am considering relocation to St. Lucia and would be coming for a short visit in January. As I am trading stocks (NASDAQ)I would need a cell phone company with 3G capabilities to be able to track my investments while visiting. Can you recommanned on a cell phone company that will enable me to get a sim card prepaid with internet ?

Thanks

Yaron

Hello Yaron,

1). Digicel has 3G but the actual Internet speed is NOT quite full 3G.

2). LIME has 3G and their Internet speed is indeed 3G.  LIME has 4G for the past few months and is the only phone company with this capability.
Packages for 3G and 4G are at http://www.time4lime.com/lc/

Yes, it's possible to subscribe to a prepaid package like in your case.
You cell phone must be unlocked to work in SLU.

3). When exactly in January are you going to be here?

4). Where will you be staying?
Dec – March is the year's high season here when everything is most expensive.

5). Have you been to SLU or to other Caribbean islands before?

Yours truly,
John

I will be arriving on the 20/1/14 and will be staying in Rodney Bay.
I have been in the past to Jamaica and will be in this trip in few islands (Barbados, Doinica, St Lucia, St, Maarten and Aruba)

Hi Dillen, :)

1). Exactly what I was afraid of: you are arriving when I am out of SLU.  I shall be in Panama on Jan. 15 - 22 for a seminar I give on cyber-trading and a few days off.

2). St. Maarten and Aruba is out of question for obvious reasons you will realize if you stop and think well.

3). Barbados is out of question too (IN MY OPINION) because the entire island is flat.  No natural beauty, EXTREME heat and EXTREME humidity.  Just like in Bahamas, Caymans, Turks & Caicos, Anguilla, all of which are flat, low-lying limestone formations, Barbadians live with the fear of a 20-metre tsunami wiping the entire population off the island in 1-2 minutes, something which prospective expats hot about their relocation do not think about and something which is bound to happen one day.
This is not what you want, is it?

4). This leaves you with Dominica and St. Lucia, and this is where I shall advise you LIKE NOBODY ELSE CAN.
I'm telling you these things to perhaps save you time and money on the trip and also to give the idea that if you settle in DOM or SLU and you will not like it, you can re-locate nearby easily. :)  All you, as a trader, need in case of relocation is only your thumb drive.

5). For how long will you stay in SLU?

6). Did you secure accommodation or need help?

I hope you will travel lightly: all you need here apart from your cellphone is shorts, T-shirts and slippers. :D

Hello Dillen,

A quick thought: have you considered St. Vincent and dropped it from your itinerary, or you omitted it altogether by mistake?

DOM, SLU and STV are all the same.
