Working for UE

Hi all!

Would like to create a new topic dedicated for those who are working/are going to work for EU institutions in Brussels.

We could share our experience and give advices, I'm sure it would be useful for most of us :)

To start, I would need an advice on the salary: I saw that national taxes (so in this case Belgium law) are not applicable and thus we are only supposed to pay for the Community and the % is from 8 to 45 % (something) of the brut salary. I would like to ask maybe you know from what exactly depends this % of taxes which would be taken from the brut salary?

EU starting salaries are very very reasonable, take comfort that the same level of job somewhere else you'd get paid far less for. You get effectively private schooling for your children, free buses to school from the age of 5, free healthcare (so you can give birth for free at the most expensive hospital in Belgium which would cost a Belgian tax payer several kks). Believe me, salary is not what you need to worry about when working for an EU institution, working life is where you should concentrate your research.

Thank you, schoolmum, actually I know my approx. future brut salary, so was just willing to know about how much of % will be taken off for social security contributions and other taxes (income tax and a special EU levy). Just want to plan my budget in advance :)

Does anyone know if the expatriation allowance (16% of basic salary) is paid only once or on monthly basis? :|

I have done the home work for you!!!!

As a European civil servant, your salary is not subject to national income tax. Instead, salaries paid by the Commission to its officials are directly subject to a Community tax which is paid directly back into the EU's budget. This tax is levied progressively at a rate of between 8% and 45% of the taxable portion of your salary. An additional special levy is in place until 2012

1. By way of derogation from Article 3(1) of Regulation (EEC, Euratom, ECSC) No 260/68 of the Council of February 1968 laying down the conditions and procedure for applying the tax for the benefit of the European Communities ( 1 ), a temporary measure regarding remuneration paid by the ►M128 Union ◄ to staff in active employment, to be known as the ‘special levy', shall be applied from 1 May 2004 to 31 December 2012.
2. The rate of this special levy, which shall apply to the base defined in paragraph 3, shall be as follows:
from 1.5.2004 to 31.12.2004
2,50 %
from 1.1.2005 to 31.12.2005
2,93 %
from 1.1.2006 to 31.12.2006
3,36 %
from 1.1.2007 to 31.12.2007
3,79 %
from 1.1.2008 to 31.12.2008
4,21 %
from 1.1.2009 to 31.12.2009
4,64 %
from 1.1.2010 to 31.12.2010
5,07 %
from 1.1.2011 to 31.12.2012
5,50 %.
3. (a) The base for the special levy shall be the basic salary used to calculate remuneration, minus:
(i) social security and pension contributions and the tax, before special levy, payable by an official in the same grade and step without dependants within the meaning of Article 2 of Annex VII, and ▼M129 1962R0031 — EN — 01.01.2011 — 010.002 — 51 ( 1 ) OJ L 56, 4.3.1968, p. 8. Regulation as last amended by Regulation (EC, Euratom) No 1750/2002 (OJ L 264, 2.10.2002, p. 15).
(ii) an amount equal to the basic salary of an official in grade 1, step 1.
(b) The components used to determine the base for the special levy shall be expressed in euro and weighted at 100.
4. The special levy shall be deducted monthly at source; the proceeds shall be entered as revenue in the general budget of the European Union.
