Driving License

Hi all,

Can a foreigner take the driving test in South Africa?

What are the formalities to get a driver's licence in South Africa?

Do you need special or extra documents being an expatriate?

How much does it cost?

Thanks!!
Dan

Hello Dan and welcome to Expat.com!

Hope that you'll soon be enlightened.;)

Harmonie.

Yes you can get a licence and yes you do need extra documents.

If you need to buy a car or apply for a licence the first step is a traffic register number. You will apply for at most traffic departments(Randburg is fairly pain free). You will need to take a valid residence / work/ spouse visa ( take along a copy).2 passport photos.Proof of address. That should be enough. Fill in the form and return about 4 working days later to collect.

We hae just done it for my husband to buy a car, as he is on a spouse permit they wanted a copy of my ID ( I needed to go with). They also asked for a copy of his foreign and international driving permit.

Once you have this I understand you can book for a licence.
