How to move to Thailand

My husband is currently working overseas and we are planning to move,live and eventually retire in Thailand. Our kids are currently studying in a local chinese primary school. In line with this, I am looking forward to hearing on some information on the relocation plan, whether we should purchase or rent property. I also understand that there is a restriction on foreigners purchasing landed property. Is this true?

Are my kids required to get any clearance or attend some sort of pre-requisite examination prior to enrolling into an international school?

Hope someone would be kind to share their experience of living in Thailand.

Yes there are restrictions on ownership. Speak to a good lawyer and do what you are doing by asking fellow expats. Many people acquire use of land on a leasehold basis and build a home. Some buy condo's. But speak to a lawyer and see what suits you. Best to rent and get a feel for the place maybe first. Also need to check visa regulations.

Building a home is great if you do it with a professional Thailand builder who can help you do it properly. Chiang Mai has alot of families and retired people doing just that. They seem very happy. If you want advice in that do a search for Chiang Mai builders as there is a really good company who specialise in building homes for expats. The land issue you must talk to a lawyer.

Buying a condo is okay as long as 49% of the ownership of the building is foreign and the rest is Thai owned. Remember there are many thousands of expats living a happy life here so it must be feasible. Good luck !
