Starting a small business in Sri Lanka. Help :)

Hi All,

Looking for advice!

My best friend and I are looking to start a small bar/plant-based cafe/co working space in Sri Lanka somewhere along the south-western coast. We aren't in the country at the moment but do plan on making a trip before the start of the season. Could anyone answer these questions for me?

Is there a particular website to use when looking for property to lease?

Would we be able to lease land and build on it?

Are there any environmental restrictions in the regards to building on the coast?

Are there any noise limitations, or would we need special noise permits?

Where can I find approximate building costs?

Any other info on where to start would be really useful!

Thanks so much :)

Building on leased land in Sri Lanka can be very tricky, especially if you are the ones paying for the building cost. Your starting point would be to get advice from a good and reputable local lawyer.

@cecil_r would it be easier to lease a building and make small amendments? I'd prefer to lease a building rather than build one anyway!

Yes. Definitely a safer option.
