Relocating to Cyprus

Hi

Looking for recommended villages to live in the Paphos area for retirement.  Travelling out in October having sold my property in the UK.  Pros and cons of New Builds versus resale properties please
It depends exactly on what you want/need out of living here as to where you live.

We live on the west coast in the spread out village of Argaka, which is about a ten or so minutes drive from Polis.  In Argaka there are about five restaurants along the coast road (this winter, only one stayed open all the year, though usually two do!);  a couple of “coffee-shops” ,  there is a huge bakers who sell many other things than just the bread that they make on the premises;  there is a large kiosk (minimarket) and two petrol stations, a small hairdresser's place, and the Muktar's office where you can pay your water bill (plus others) and have him sign forms, etc.
This is a pretty area where there are many grape vines, orange and lemon groves,  avocado trees, and fields of beans, melons etc etc .  We have the forests and hills behind us and the sea in front of us, with long uncrowded beaches.
There are also many houses between here and Polis which is our nearest small town.  In Polis, just about everyone knows everyone else, even if just by sight.  There are many shops, restaurants and bars, coffee shops, five pharmacies, a cottage hospital, a couple or so petrol stations,  a couple of major banks, a bus station, etc etc.
We love living in this area, but there are plenty of villages higher up in the hills - which I'm sure others will advise you on.  The higher up villages DO benefit from being a couple or so degrees cooler in the summer, though they do also have low cloud and more rain than the lower villages in the cooler months - and can be a lot colder during the winters.

Everyone has to traipse into Paphos town to do anything “red tape-wise” when they first arrive, though once established, many things can be done on-line now.
I would agree with WCL above and  decide what it is you expect  want need and would be nice to have in order to decide ... Basically lifestyle choices...

Locations here differ what's great for one man is a nightmare for another

Better to take some short lets sample the areas of interest and explore first... Before committing to a purchase.... Things change dynamics change .. check morning noon and night.....winter summer.... Above all.else manage your expectations and have an exit plan
@WestCoastLives
Thanks for all your information, we arrived in Cyprus on Sunday and have been chilling for a few days but are driving to Argaka and Polis today to have a look round , looking forward to seeing this area now !
We are staying in Peyia for a couple of months so we have the benefit of being close to Paphos for making appointments with solicitors etc
It's an exciting time but also quite scary but we are looking forward to our new adventure here on this beautiful sunny island 😊
@Toon We are staying Marina Hilltops , it is quite a way from the town
We have a hire car but would like to try out some of the restaurants this weekend,
Can you recommend a reliable taxi company that we could use for our 2 month stay here
For sure Roberts or coral bay taxis I will get you the numbers
You must try Peyia Tavern phone and book.... Geitonia is walk in no problem.....and the Grand get there pre 630 to get a table ...all in peyia village. They are the best ...as locals we highly recommend them

We do our best .. have a great day today and enjoy what Cyprus has to offer wherever you choose
@alisonrich1958
Hi!     Bear in mind that it's Wednesday today and therefore half day closing!
Several shops don't bother opening on a Wednesday as there aren't many tourists around!   (Saturday is half day closing too!).  The remainder open for just half a day of course!
The restaurants are open though!!   I can name them if you want, (and our favourites in Polis!) but I'll leave all the things to do here until you think you might end up here!!
(This applies to all of Cyprus,  well, in the ROC anyway - don't know if the illegally occupied area in the north of Cyprus has the half day closing same days).

Toon is there a bus service that goes from Peyia to Paphos harbour
Peyia 616 minibus to coral bay then change to 615  to paphos  or tomb. of the king's

If you Google peyia and Paphos buses you will get timings

@Jackie53

This is the best plan for retirement any person could hope for!

Have you already chosen property in the Paphos area? Or still looking for?

We are also looking for information about retiring to the Paphos area, but as it is so large need guidance.

Our needs we think are simple but are ready to be advised accordingly. We would like a village  /small town with good amenities, such as described above, with a good bus service as we really do not want to own another car if possible. locals amenable to incomers who know nothing about the language, wiling to learn but doubtful of remembering much in honesty,

A good view, coast or greenery but not located in the mountains, been there and done that,  its blustery, can be cold and a long way from services.

To be picky we'd rather not have views of high rise apartments. Also does anyone know of local flying clubs, amateur radio clubs/members, old time dance hall for learners and a quilting club in the near locality. a huge long shot but you don't know unless you ask.

Thanks in advance,

M&M Hunt

Sadly good bus services to and from the smaller inland  villages are not common and those that do are not brilliant...many simply have a single shop/kiosk a coffee shop and a taverna and not much else.....  The larger villages may have a few more and their services may have a bus service that may be once an hour with limited running hours which get even shorter in winter... Outlying areas you need a car for sure and mostly will need to speak the language...

I think you would be wise to choose a coastal area but they tend to mere expensive..

Best advice is to get here take a short let rental property try various areas see what takes your fancy and do the same there . New arrivals rarely get their first choice right..it takes a little time 6momths to a year  to identify exactly what it is and where you want to be that suits your intended lifestyle and gives you the services you require . We are all different and what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit another..

For example we live in peyia as it suits us and gives us what we want and need .. been here I years and have had 5 properties all rented and we bought our (5th) property last year....but many hate it .. others that we know have chosen outlying areas  such as prodromi argaka droussiea kathikas tsada Kallepia .. then you need to consider health andtransport many are on hills and can be challenging waking as one gets older if you don't have a car

It's difficult to make recommendations as there are so many places but am sure ther will be one that suits you

Good luck
