Facts vs Rumours: Roundtable Discussion Jan 20 3 pm
A SPECIAL INVITATION :TO all members and friends of the Meeting Place. On Wednesday January 20th, at 3 pm a special event will take place here. The subject is the impact of the Cruise ships in Amber Cove on our city. Chaired by Dr. Jose Natalio Redondo, who has represented Puerto Plata in meetings with Carnival and is on the executive of the governing body for cruise ships, the panel will include Patria Rodriguez of Turintur, Zabeida Vargas of Go Caribic, and Minnie Maalea of Iberdom, as well as Julio Almonte, Vice-Minister of Tourism. Mr Almonte will present up-to-date statistics about Cruise-ship passenger visits, while Frances Boylston will present the results of her survey of passengers. The panellists comments will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience.
The arrival of the cruise ships has been a much anticipated event and now three months later we are beginning to access the impact. This is a special opportunity for members and friends of the Meeting Place to hear from and discuss with, in an English presentation, people closely implicated with the cruise ships. There have been lots of questions and various and sometimes conflicting answers: some factual and some rumours, such as: Is the disappointment many in Puerto Plata express justified? Is it true that only some are benefitting from the passengers’ arrival, and if so, why? Is the problem the tight controls exercised by Carnival which limit access? What of the failure of the governments to complete renovations and roads? Are there plans to open another port?
Do not miss this opportunity to sift the facts from the rumours!
