The 1st time I went to Belize, I was in Maya Beach just down the road from Placencia. I met both locals and expats right away. I never felt lonely because I was open to meeting new people. If you hang out at the same watering hole for a few days, you will meet friends. I also took a yoga class and met some nice ladies there too. I met my now husband of 6 years when I was there the 1st time.
Good luck, smile, be friendly and I don't think you will be lonely!
