Hello!

Hi everyone,

I'm from the UK, and going to be living in Mauritius for three months from January 2013 as part of my studies. I'm very much looking forward to spending time there; it looks wonderful. I have a few questions which I'm hoping people will be able to help me with.

1. Where would people recommend to find accommodation? Coming for three months I am kind of stuck between holiday accommodation (pricey) and long terms rents (often have a minimum of one year tenancy). Any recommendations would be great. I would ideally like to be in Grand Baie or the surrounding area, and looking for a flat/apartment in a safe area in which I can arrange WIFI. My budget is about £400 per month (approx 20000 rupees)

2. Will I be able to get a Mauritian mobile phone contract for three months?

3. I currently follow a vegan diet. What are the chances of being able to stick to this is Mauritius? I'm happy eating vegetables and pulses/grains, but are things like soya milk available?

Plus any other advice people might have!

Thank you very much in advance, I look forward to chatting with some of you! :)

Yes you will find all the vegan products, soya milk, etc. at Shoprite, located at
Quatre Bornes, on the main Highway going from the airport to Port-Louis.
You will not miss anything.

Hi Jennniff,

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

for your accommodation search, you could post an advert in the housing in Mauritius section.

Best of luck,
Christine

Hello :) Good luck with you search. I'm sure you will love it here.

Hi Jennif,

With 20k ruppees you'll find an accomodation easily. May be you can try flatsharing, as it seems to be quite a lot of volunteeers, students etc in mauritius. If you wish, send me a message mid december, I'll ask around the UN volunteers if someone has a room to rent. This site has a housing section here:
https://www.expat.com/en/housing/africa/mauritius/
Otherwise you can try here:

Regarding to the phone, better go on prepaid as you stay only a couple of months. A starter pack costs around €20, including air time. Make sure your own handset is sim unlocked, so that you can put a foreign sim inside. Cellplus (Orange) and Emtel are the two mobile providers in Mu. See their websites http://www.orange.mu/mobile/ and http://www.emtel-ltd.com/ for the rates. Pretty high I must say, between 30 cents to 1€ per minute locally. If you plan to call home, better use skype or VOIP solutions...

Eating vegan should not be a problem around, as a lot of mauritians are hinduists.Although Mauritius is considered as part of Africa, asian & indian influences are stronger than african's. I think you'll find easily Aroy soya milk at the supermarket.

I think this is pretty it! Have fun in MU,

GD.

Hi! I'll necro this in case you still need info regarding 3. the only (plant) milk you won't find is powdered milk. Please feel free to drop me a line, if you haven't found where to get artisanal fresh soy-milk, Super-U in Gbay may still stock it. There's also fresh tofu sold there and a few other places. There's a variety of long life plant milks from Australia (Pure Harvest) and France (Bjorg)that are organic. You'd have noticed products not tested on animals are hard to come by from toothpaste to every basic thing, I'm working on a campaign, it'll be on [my username].wordpress.com (the Mauritian vegan collective essentially) and I'm heading to Mauritius too :)
