I've an account in the US myself, so I have to refill its balance once in a while - doing so by a wire transfer is fast, but costly (with all the banks involved in the transfer charging between them up to $55 for a single transfer), when I mail a check to my bank, on the other hand, there is just a small postage (although it takes more time).
And the person writing the check gets to cash it for free, so it's a win-win. Hope this proposition sounds less weird now..
