Hi I'm from the uk; my partner of 6 years lives in the USA and Iwant to find out if its possible to get married on the visa waiver in the USA, then; without switching status, move back to the UK and apply for an alternative visa which will allow me the right to work in the USA? Any suggestions?

I do not understand what you mean by alternative visa. Yes, you can get married on VWP. Check with the local court house what documents are required. Double check. Request several notarized copies of the marriage certificate with Golden Apostille.
You return to the UK. Your partner files CR1; see travel.state.gov and USCIS.gov for details from forms to fees. Current processing time 12-16 months if everything is in perfect order.
