Traffic in India

Hello everyone,

Which city or area do you live in in India, and how do you find the traffic?

How long does it take to commute to work or run errands?

Is there a rush hour in your city? What times of the day would you recommend people to avoid driving if they can?

Are there any ways to avoid spending too much time in traffic in India?

What is parking availability and cost like?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

India is already world's second most populated country and due to the growth of India's economy from 1991 to 2014 had created a very large number of middle class. Since the availability of finance for buying two and four wheelers are so easy in India that the number of vehicles had increased by 5000% during the economic growth.

Since other Asian countries Indian governments never bothered about planning its infrastructure in advance considering the economic growth and buying power when they start planning and develop the infrastructure it much less than required.

India never had a culture of disciplined driving and with unprecedented explosion of all types of vehicles, undisciplined and selfish driving culture, poor traffic management and inadequate roads, driving in most Indian cities is a nightmare for anybody especially the expats and Non Resident Indians who used to drive in systematic, disciplined and civilized driving environments.

Government, traffic police and other civic bodies in India are least bothered about it and you will find 50 years old vehicles to the latest models of cars, motor bikes, commercial vehicles and human pulled or cycled transports and commercial vehicles are driven in almost every city creating the situation more chaotic so with experience of traveling over 80 countries in different continents perhaps in my opinion driving in Indian cities and towns are the biggest challenges to any driver can ever face.

Most importantly, 95% of the Indian drivers and riders are never been formally trained and 50% of them do not have a driving license.
