Do and don't in Bulgaria

Are you living in Bulgaria? We need you to share your experience of the local customs :)

Is it difficult to adjust to the local customs in Bulgaria?

Could you please share with us a list of the do's and don't's in Bulgaria?

Thanks!

Taxi drivers try to rip some money off the foreigners (there is already a topic on this theme). So avoid getting cabs from the airport.
People should also be careful where they park their cars. You should better use a paid parking to have your car secured. And do not leave your money, photo camera, phones etc in sight in your car.

Not sure what EuropeWord is thinking about but one should NOT leave valuables in sight in your car anywhere!!!  No matter whether you are in Bulgaria, in the US, or many other places around the world, keep your valuable posessions out of sight.

Having said that, some comments on the DOs and DONTs in Bulgaria:  One of the possible activities while visiting Bulgaria is to go to one or several of the many monasteries across the country (many of them are in the mountain regions).  If you do that, you may want to wear some more modest clothing, so not to offend the monks or nuns.
On the DOs side -- you need to visit several places (or chose some of them dependent on your schedule):
Bansko, the Rila Monastery, Bachkovski monastery, Veliko Tqrnovo, Nessebar, Sozopol, Varna, Plovdiv, the Valley of Kings (near Kazanlak), Shipka....

I would say that taxi drivers in Bulgaria, especially some at the airport will rip you off regardless of whether you are a foreigner or not. This is such a shame, and it is unfortunate, but has happened to me elsewhere in the EU, not just in Bulgaria.

There are shuttles from the airport to the city central train station and the intercity bus station, which is quite reasonable compared to taxi and also convenient to get on either bus, tram or train. Just check the blue signs at the airport right as you are walking out of the customs control. We used them today and it cost us only 3 euros/person and we had 2 large suit cases each. So quite cheap compared to a taxi fare which you are not sure of how much would really cost. I think the shuttle bus was called Choice.

Bonjour Virginie et Claude!  :) Vous êtes hors sujet sur cette discussion. Vous devriez envoyer un message privé à bboris50 et éviter de laisser votre numéro de portable sur un forum. ;)

Not all taxis on the airport are bad. In fact, if you go out from the right exit (viewpoint of someone who just landed and gathered baggage) you will see two queues of cabs from very legitimate companies: OK Supertrans and Taxi S Express (a.k.a. 9 12 80). With one of those you can get to the center for under 10 leva. Besides, by law, even the fake taxis have their fare written on the window of the cab. Just look that it is not more than 0.8 leva per kilometer.

About the do's and don'ts: Nodding your head in Bulgarian means NO. Shaking it to the sides means YES. So, careful with that.
