Dealing with homesickness in South Africa

Hello everyone,

Being an expat in South Africa can turn out to be a wonderful human, social or professional adventure... with potential moments of nostalgia and homesickness along the way.

What are your personal tips to prevent homesickness?

How do you deal with such feelings?

Are there shops or stores offering products from your home country in South Africa? Or maybe venues with music and ambiance from your homeland?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Hi Priscilla

Being a Zimbabwean expat in South Africa is somewhat an advantage because as much as South Africans differ from Zimbabweans, both countries being in Southern Africa have a similar Southern Africa ''Culture''.

Food is exactly the same, only cooked differently or eaten differently. I am a foodie and find that i don't feel homesick  so much in this regard. Although there are still some foods that are only found in Zim and not here. There are also a  lot of shops that sell food from home.

When i feel homesick i play music from home and when its really bad i just go home.

SA is a lot like Zim now and after all, home is where you hang your hat :-)
