Suggestions on areas to move to

Dear All

I'm looking for some advice, my husband and I are looking to move to Singapore in the summer, can some one please suggest some good areas to rent in.
We are thirty some things, no kids so don't need to be near a school, very sociable but too old to be living in the middle of a party! We have the usual expat package, accomadation, expenses, car etc. we will be working in the Keppel Docks area (I think that's right). Would prefer not to have a long commute time, I hate facing the crowds across town every morning and night, but if we need to to get a great area that's fine.

Also, rental leases are they available for 6 months, 1 year or month to month?

Thank you all in advance, we appreciate you taking the time to help.

welcome,

A few usual areas for expats:
- Orchard - right smack in Central, shopping, party
- Bkt Timah/Novena/Thomson - the belt encircling Orchard with lots of trees and restaurants. The former is the fav of expats, and already more moving into latter  which was predominantly locals/Asian
_ further north, Yio Chu Khang/Woodlands - you'll perhaps fit yr budget for a house. Quite often in land-scarce Sg, it is terrace house and seem claustrophobic, but an option if you want to avoid apmt living. Also becoming popular due to Relocation of US, French schools to here.
_ east mountbatten, fort road, katong, siglap - near airport, leafy and some traditinal feel of old Sgp still felt. Fav amongst Asian expats and also westerners. Nearest to airport stretch and sgp fav and packed beach stretch.
- west coast - mirror image of east coast but nowhere as homely feel (i live in east side, you see), but now with Sentosa, Resorts, Casinos, And, etc. furthest west will be sgp industrial zone, but in the mid-stretch you have university, some nice housing and parks. Beach not as good as east though.

Hope that general comments help. I am sure many have written more/better in this forum and other online resources. Ultimately, it is what you want and willing to adapt to. Most expats will stay amongst theit kind and  later congregate to complain about locals... Hahah i've also seen the other extreme who embraced locals and mingle. The type of experiencr depends also on what you are willing to extend yourself.

There are also some very nice Black and white former colonial houses with nice grounds if your budget permits. Far away from crowds and amenities, but no problem if you have care and no kids now.

All the best.

What about the Buona Vista area? Especially One-North, which has Rochester Park. From what I know, most of the residents there are expats, and the apartments and houses there have gorgeous architecture! It's quiet at night too. It's quite easy to get to Keppel Harbour from here, because you can use the MRT Circle Line.

There are no fixed periods for rental leases here, it's up to the owner or sub-tenant to decide! There are leases for 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, and any duration the person renting wants.

You can get more information for accomodation in Singapore on this site here (expat-blog.com/en/guide/asia/singapore/1038-accommodation-in-singapore.html) or at SmartExpat (smartexpat.sg/expat-faqs/).

Check out websites such as gumtree.com for rent listings! I would advice you not to get an agent, but do be careful in your search for a house / apartment.

Good luck!
