Derek,
Make sure you have a visa prior to leaving.
Passport must have 6 months or more on it.
Change money once you have arrived.
You MUST register with the police here once you arrive - within 72 hours, normally.
Taxis are easy - just hold out your hand, negotiate price beforehand.
They dont speak English here in shops, officials, etc. Try to learn a few Russian phrases before coming here.
Are you on holiday, or working/living here from Dec?
