Boots on the ground people is how you find apartments. There are few listings, will be overpriced and not like what they claim etc.
Stay at hotel, visit areas you are interested in, have a local.call and ask about anything you find! For example on the west side of the city you will find lots of place with for rent signs. Take pictures with your phone then have someone call for you to get basic info before you go see the place.
