Naturalisation and citizenship in South Africa

Hello everyone,

What are the requirements for acquiring citizenship in South Africa? For example, length of residence, language requirements, employment etc..

What formalities are involved in the process?

What is the policy on dual-citizenship in South Africa? Do you have to give up your former nationality?

What are the advantages and benefits of acquiring South African citizenship, in your opinion?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Though I have never tried to apply for a citizenship,  those with national ids have a lot of benefits mostly in accessing social services and respect in South Africa

I have permanent residency,  you can only apply for naturalisation to be a citizen after having 10 years being a permanent resident.

I don't think there are many restrictions other than 10 years of permanent residence.

As for dual citizenshi,n k think it depends on your country of origin if they allow. If not it means you have to denounce your current citizenship status
