Digital nomad visa ... YES!

Digital nomads have been in a bit of a grey area in Indonesia and, sadly, we have been a shade slow in catching up.
However, the potential good news is there are moves to create a new class of visa that will allow digital nomads to live and work in Indonesia. It gets better, there's talk about zero tax on overseas income from this, but you will have to pay taxes on anything earned within Indonesia.

Caveat - Don't get too excited and pack your bags just yet as nothing is set in stone.

@Fred That IS exciting! Thanks for keeping us informed. I'm a few years out, yet, but contemplating the possibilities. Thanks again for your efforts.

Here in Bali, one would never know there has been any grey areas when it comes to digital nomads.  This is especially true in the Canggu and Ubud areas where they have been around for a number of years, ever since dial up modem internet connections became a thing of the past.  They have slowly become the natural transition of what we used to call back packers.
There goes the consequence of desktops morphing into tablets with keyboards, and phones becoming  ... well ... errrr ... everything.

We're at a point where anyone and everyone can be a reporter, and it's way easier to get published than ever before - even the crappiest of the crap can start a blog.
Youtuber is now a job rather than a hobby, so laws and visa really should reflect that.

We're in a a brave new world, and it's up to Indonesia to carefully weigh up the pros and cons, but do so quickly before Thailand beats us to it.

Minister Uno has now confirmed this will happen. Now it's socialising the thing and getting the regs into place.
Say first set up committees. These need to visit Paris, Newyork, London, Tokyo, Hawaii etc to research DN visas. 2 years.

Set up legal structure with a committee. 3 years.

Next another committee to build a system. 100 million dollars, but will cost a billion as  "commissions need to be paid". 5 years.

Year 11. System doesn't work and idea forgotten.

I won't hold my breath1f923.svg

The politicians behind this want it, and want it quickly.
Lots of unemployed people, too little tourist money, and election campaigns effectively started.

And, surprising as many will find it, the prime goal is actually to support local businesses. (Horses mouth)
