I think asking her directly is the best way to discover what she needs and wants badly. However, some men prefer to make it more romantic and in surprise form and try to avoid asking. However, you can still ask her closest friends if they promise not to tell her about it. If that is also not possible, or you don't know her friends, you should think on your own about what would she like. Maybe she has some interesting hobby she needs an equip meant for, or she told you about an expensive accessory/piece of closing she would like to have.
