Hi everyone,

Two years after the start of the pandemic, it is time to take stock of the evolution of the cost of living in Malta or more specifically, in the region where you live. The idea is to help people get ready for their expatriation to Malta to plan their day-to-day budget for some key expenses.

If you are a tenant, what is your monthly rent? Please give details of the type of property you are in.

How much are your monthly charges (water, electricity, common area maintenance charges, etc.) and additional expenses (mobile phone and/or internet box subscriptions)?

How much do you spend on commuting (by public transport or using your car) each month?

How much does your grocery shopping cost in Malta?

How much do you spend on health care (health insurance, consultations, etc.)?

How much are your children's school fees, depending on the type of school they attend?

What about your budget for leisure activities?

Do not hesitate to indicate other everyday costs if they could be useful to others.

Thank you for your contribution :)

Who will answer all your questions? I guess nobody will contribute to such personal questions! If you want to know details just check out for annual inflation in Malta and you will get the respective answer without asking personal questions most people will not answer anyway.

They ask this question each year on every country's forum. Its to help people who are thinking of moving to a new place.

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

@hanselmar, I totally understand that some information can be very personal, but at least can you share the average cost?  :unsure

As @SimCityAT mentioned, this thread is to help the future expats people.

Cheers,

If people want to know the cost of renting they can just as easily look at letting agents sites.

They are not all out of date, Gozo Properties for Long Term Let are up to date.

@Cheryl

I agree with hanselmar that these questions are personal. I am willing to give an indication of my own expenses but as everyone's situation is different, I am not sure how much help this is. My expenses are based on a mature couple (husband retired, I still have a few years left before I can retire) we have no dependent children, so a young family will obviously have much higher expenses.

If you are a tenant, what is your monthly
rent? Please give details of the type of property you are in.

Not applicable in my case, but my understanding is a 2-bedroom
furnished apartment can be rented on a long-let contract for €600 upwards. The
same in Gozo could be as cheap as €450

How much are your monthly charges (water,
electricity, common area maintenance charges, etc.) and additional expenses
(mobile phone and/or internet box subscriptions)?

Water and electricity around €70 per month. Common area not
applicable as I live in a private house, but I think the usual is €50 per month.
I rarely use my mobile phone, pay-as-you-go possibly €10 a month maximum. Internet
€25 per month

How much do you spend on commuting (by public
transport or using your car) each month?

I work from home.

How much does your grocery shopping cost in Malta?

 €500 per month for
the two of us. (Meat and fish eaters)

How much do you spend on health care (health
insurance, consultations, etc.)?

I am entitled to free health care from the state. My
employer provides worldwide private health care insurance for both myself and
husband, and life insurance for me. Travel insurance is free with bank account.

How much are your children's school fees,
depending on the type of school they attend?

Child's schooling was free until
Bachelors (Hons) stage.

What about your budget for leisure activities?

Mature couple, so mostly quiet meals out ranging from €60 -
€100.

Do not hesitate to indicate other everyday costs
if they could be useful to others.

Gas is supplied in cylinders. A cylinder costs €15 and will
last at least 3 months for cooking (hob only is gas, oven is electric)

Gym memberships cost around €320 a year.

GozoMo

You would be lucky to rent a property in Gozo for €450 this information is out of date.

Little out there I would have thought, a 2 bed apartment in Gozo is usually listed around  €600 to €800 nowadays.

We are a retired couple in a large penthouse, utilities about €70 to 80 every two months.

Food a month probably around €300 to €350.

hanselmar

Cheryl,

I am not sure what statistics are published by the authorities of Malta,

1. one can rightfully say food is at least € 350.00 per person per head per month

2. electricity is about € 50.00 per person per head per month because in our case we have air-conditioning and electrical heating and use electricity for cooking.

3. As rent was mentioned before I would like to say one has to invest at least € 250.000 to obtain a decent property of  100 sqm

4. In order to obtain the Maltese passport one has to invest at least € 900.000

5. people who have a car have to pay an annual license of € 250-800

6. car insurance is between € 100-300

7. the petrol fuel bill is about € 40.00 per month

8. public transport is € 35.00 per month

The annual inflation in 2021 was 0.64%,  higher inflation is expected for 2022

Cheers,

I hope this information helps,

Hans-Elmar

GozoMo

@hanselmar our food bill is that for two people and we eat well.

hanselmar

@hanselmar

our food bill includes eating out because restaurants have to be supported too.

GozoMo

@hanselmar I would call going out for meals entertainment not food bill.

Eating out is normally included in entertainment and not in the food bill which covers domestic eating.

As for utilities, electric and water, our cost is usually around  €80 every two month bill and that is for 2 people in a 150 sqm penthouse with a/c used for heating and oven, gas hob only, ie around  €20 per head per month.

Actually I was surprised to find a couple of Gozo apartments advertised for €450 per month on the Facebook page you mentioned above in post #7 of this same thread "They are not all out of date, Gozo Properties for Long Term Let are up to date."

Some contributors have quoted a lower figure than I have for for utilities at €70 per month. In Malta & Gozo water and electricity bills are listed together, usually billed every 2 months. Usually we would receive a bill every 2 months of around €100 - €120, we a couple living in a 4 bedroom house, use air-conditioning and electric oven. The past 2 years during the pandemic I have worked from home so my laptop and monitors are running 45 hours a week, pushing the electricity bill up.

GozoMo

@Evreham Any at that price will not be in the best areas or the best kitted out, new two bedroom apartments here are advertised at €700, Whether they get that amount who knows.

Moocher

I can only speak for Gozo , but definitely do not pay the asking price for long term rentals , there is a glut of properties available and yet they keep building more and more .

and putting the rental up, when we came here in 2013 we rented a large house with a pool for less then we  pay for a penthouse, it is up for rental now for nearly a thousand more then we paid.
