i  have ''a friend'' who has been here since december and ''he'' is very worried about the fact that ''he'' did not tell anyone about this, and when the time comes and ''he'' needs to go back to canada it will cost him a fotune, the fact that there was no flights possible due to his criminal record (cant go to the u,s,a,) is that a good enough excuse for the overstay?

Guest2022

It will probably cost him 4000 pesos. At most 5000 pesos

The rule of thumb when talking to a lot of people is under 120 days you're golden. Plus on their new website after 30 days you can apply for an extension and it only cost you I forgot what the amount is very little for up to the 120 days so that you're not considered overstaying but you pay about the same price I think it is. I would never tell them about his criminal past that would be a sure way to getting blackballed forever. Usually they don't answer the reason why you overstayed. But if he can't fly the US then odds are he is a criminal history but here it's a little less lenient I think. I don't know they never asked me that question before they ask why I overstayed and I said because I love your Island they charge me and we both go are happy ways but he's looking at probably like 4,200 I believe for up to 365 days. But the important thing is if you plan on coming back here 119 days is usually your safety cushion. That way you won't get put on the list of habitual overstaying . If he has a lot of free time and wants to submit for a yearly visitor residency card there's always that way to go. But trust me there are so many different forms you got to get every year update I mean it's better to hire a lawyer to do it all there's two in the North Coast  that specifically and those endeavors and they are well worth the extra $120 they charge you on top of the filing fee but still for under 200 bucks they do all the work for you. So I would just say if your friend is determining it back to Canada he could always fly to Europe and France is having a sale 170 the other day to France and then I don't know what the cost to Canada is I believe I can't be more than $300 that's if he needs to get back

Phannigan - there is not a yearly visitor residency. There is a 30-day visitor card (for tourists from most countries) that can be extended to 120 days, a visitor visa (for tourists from a select few countries), and then there is residency (family unification, retiree, investor, or rentista).

thank you so much guys

Sorry I meant to say temporary year residency permit. I didn't mean to say Visa sorry. It's packet of stuff you had to fill out I know coming from the US I had to get my birth certificate put in Spanish a letter of good behavior from my local municipality, a copy of my birth certificate translated in spanish, the quick physical than any doctor here can do for you, two photos of myself for the ID and I believe just to be safe I had a copy of my lease for a year. And also we submitted two quarterly bank statements, and proof that I had income of more turn $1,500 a month . I believe we submitted it on like the second of the month and by the 15th I already had the printout copy which is a temporary I'd like to say by the end of the month I picked up the actual card from my lawyer's office. I guess you can keep doing that over and over or you can just submit permanent residency here in the US you can also apply for a dual citizenship if you would like to go that path

Hello Ladies, Gents.
not sure if this is the right post for my question, though:
I hopefully will arrive in Sosua on the 1st of August and I was told to visit the immigration office asap. Do I have to travel to SD or is there an office near by at the north coast?

Thanks in advance for a short hint.

Best
Thomas

Visit the immigration office for what?

I think the important thing to remember is to get the extension before your 30 day period expires.
That way, you remain legal for the duration of the extension.

I think you need to post your return ticket..... not sure.

The extension is done online and everything is uploaded.  I don't know if you can do it at the immigration office.

Embassy of DR  in Germany told me, I get a visa into my passport here in Germany to legally enter DR. But I had to go to the immigration office in DR at once after my arrival, they would legalize it. ????
Confusing.
My first experience conc. DR authorities. Refreshing ungerman.  :D

No idea what they are talking about.

Guest2022

OK, thanks planner. Maybe the visa itself will give me more clarity, when I get it, and when I get it in time.
Had to call them two times tobavoid that they mixed up my date of travel. Withoit my call they would have sent it 20 days after my leave.
Welcome to DR, Thomas !

But I bet, the billing will be in time.  :sosad:

Dr. Tom.  I have heard of this before but they don't even know what they are talking about.  Residency is a 2 part process.  The first part is the VISA.  Once you have that, you proceed to the DR to apply for your residency.  A different process and some additional documents required.

This process has a tendency of changing and for this reason many people here will advise you to get a lawyer involved to assist you with the process.  Lishali Baez seems to be highly recommended here.  You will have to talk with her and get a sense of what her fees are.  I used a lawyer and was very happy that I did but my lawyer was also very reasonably priced.  Well under a $1000US for the entire process.

You create an account on immigration (my lawyer did this for me)  and load the documents.  Your lawyer will tell you when and what to do.  It took me the better part of a month to make my application for residency.  After that I just waited...about 4 months before I went to SD for the process.  Don't worry about the VISA running out of time...there is no issues or penalties unless you leave the country before you receive your VISA and then have to pay an overstay fee.

Hope that helps...

The confusion is WHAT VISA are you talking about?  You have never mentioned all the residency visa documents so I don't think that is the discussion.

Tourist visa?  I didn't think one was required from Germany that you simply come in a tourist card!

An extension if your tourist card?   That is all done in line.

So without more information we have no idea what to advise you!

Thanks Mike, planner.

Embassy of DR in Germany told me, I would get a business visa for 2 months. After arrival in DR I had to contact the immigration authorities in DR asap.
The visa they give me in Germany would only be provisional and it would only become final after a visit of the Dominican authorities.

I will wait to receive the visa here, come to DR and ask Ms. Baez how to proceed.
Seems, like Mike mentioned, the process in DR and in the embassy here are not in line.

Okay so now we understand more - a business visa is a different animal.  I was under the impression you are retiring here.

Guest2022

You were not wrong, madam, my main business will be retiring there. ;)
EXcept for the one or the other voluntary work.

Thanks to all of you for your kind support.

Okay  cool.   So not sure why they got you on a business visa.  Lets see what happens when you are here.
