Divorce in the DR

Last activity 28 June 2021 by planner

My wife wants a divorce so I got a hold of a lawyer. Says it will cost me 3k. Says that wife is in titled to alimony payments if she files first. He also said that after I have signed the power of attorney papers that I should get on the first plane I can get. I also read that it’s best to get a lawyer from my home state. I am retired and wife hasn’t worked in several years. Ran an air b&b from her apartment before I started paying all the bills. I really need some sound advice.

Chevy - I'm sorry you're going through this.

I would suggest reaching out to Lishali Baez, our resident attorney, to see if either she can assist you or she can refer you to someone who handles divorce.

To help you with advice from this group, it might be helpful to include details like how long you've been married, if you were married in DR, if your wife is Dominican. I know nothing about divorce here, but I would think those details could be relevant.

All those details are relevant.   Good advice, I second it.

There has to be a reason or by mutual consent.

The cost could be less going by these divorce lawyers:

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your situation, I need to be sure if you got married in DR or not. If you do.
If there were children or not.
3k is a lot of money.
DR has two ways to do that done easy and faster but you need to move faster.

If you still need help I can help you by referring you to honest lawyers that I know depending on your location.

If you don't know how to move under that specific scenario will be heavy for you if she is Dominican and you not and that is not fear, need to be just for both.

Thanks

Martfro - welcome to the forums.  It appears you are a lawyer - is that correct?  Just confirming, thanks.
