Cuenca is facing its worst natural disaster in years. Flooding caused by rainfall has resulted as excess water has raised the levels of three rivers in the city to flood stage.
The river Tarqui is at its highest level ever recorded.
The rivers overflowed their banks on Saturday .. and remained at flood stage today (Sunday, May 16, 2021).
Mayor Pedro Palacios says most of the roads into Cuenca have been blocked .. with crews working to remediate flooding and landslide problems.

The mayor also said he would announce today the locations of two shelters that will accommodate those left homeless by the floods.
Police reported making over 100 rescues by this morning.
